'The lost breed' by TARGETE 'The lost breed' by TARGETE
This is Gouache and watercolor color rough, which I may turn into a final oil painting. I hadn't worked in traditional mediums in a while so I'm a lil rusty, the shadow colors turned out a little to neutral but I didn't want to mess with it digitally keeping all the natural painting intact for good or worse.

I wanted to make an image that was an a-typical fantasy piece adding the little man cub creature at the bottom kinda brings it to a more interesting place in terms of concept and story. I welcome any of your thoughts about the little man cub creature, maybe get a series or story based on this initial image.

This is fun. It's great to see artists that are open to free interpretation of their works. Great use of blue in this piece as a subtle highlight color, as well as building those shadows. I think the "rough" finish gives it an entirely different feel than if you were "polish" it.

If I may contribute my own little tagline or prologue to the image:
"The boy does not know. He cannot know!"

"And why not, Bestimus? He is the last of his kind. He should at least know his fate."

"And be raised an outcast? Alesta, you of all people of the kingdom should know that subjects do not always revere their royalty. There has not been a half-breed birth since the days of my grandfather. The people have grown used to two legs, not four. They would hate and revile him before he was of age to understand why."

"He is our son, Bestimus. He will lead this people if only we show him the courage he will need. The people love you, husband. So can they your son."

"They fear me with equal passion."

"And well the should, husband. Such is the role a king plays for his people, moreover when he has the capacity to eat those that mock him!"

A deep chuckle rumbled through is supine figure and he held her close. She was hard to argue with.

I havea great weakness for Beauty and the Beast themses. Even if it may not be your view of it, this picture speaks volumes. :-) Thank you for sharing this with us. I do hope it'll make it to a canvas some day with vibrance and life inthe colours.

Awesome. Looks to me like the cub down at the bottom is a, maybe magical, crossbreed.

Great picture.

Somehow I think the only way for the man-cup hybrid species to find acceptance by the others is to found their own society as they have no really place in the lion or human tribes. The woman could be named Ave and the male Mada, an amagram telling they are making the first of the new species, though they may not keep the only pair this way since the border gets weaker each time it is crossed.

Maybe depending on which species is father and which is mother there are two slightly different hybrid specieses.
Ho many legs does the child have? You kept it a bit diffuse.

The human-mother hybrids maybe have an additional pair of arms at the hips and the lion-mother hybrids have it at the shoulders and a mix of both depends again on the who the mother is.

Reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, the little Cub-Boy being their child or w/e.. if you know like, they didn't fall in love.. and he was just being his beasty-self and you know like, got her pregnant or w/e.

But yeah, this is awesome.. ^_^

Find and play Quest for Glory 3, Wages of War. (Sierra is the company, and it is almost impossible to find )

Its a great story involving humanoid liontaur, and cheeta-esc people. I think you may enjoy ^___^ This image depicts the story to the T.

(PS- Great piece)

I am left in awe even though you mention it's just "gouache and watercolors". I think the colors are superb, and that the contrast is just the right one, given that the overall feel of the scene must be a dark, grim one. Very beautiful rendition of the details and ornaments :)

Now, regarding what you ask about ideas for the man cub creature and/or to make a story or series about this image.
Well, given the title, it makes me think that the cub-child is in fact the lost breed. It could be that the liontaur (is that correct? I don't know if the term exists, well, now it does :) ) fell in love with her (perhaps she could be some sort of savage princess?) and won her hand someway (a quest or simply by a challenge), giving birth to the little cub-child. The story would revolve around him, rather than his parents, and how he would grow up to become one of the best warrior/hunters. Unfortunately, he would be shun by everyone. Humans wouldn't fully accept him, and neither the liontaurs (there we go again ^^; ).
I think it has a lot of potential, given the wild and savage attributes the idea itself transmits. I'd have to ponder it more. I hope I was of any help :D

In Octavia Butler's "The Patternmaster" she has a breed of people called the Clayarks. The cub/child could very well be a young clayark. They are part lion/human. Fantastic read and too short in my opinion, but the first thing I thought of when reading your description. Fantastic piece, would love to see it finished in oils.

Reminds me of the art you usually see on really old fantasy novels.

Suggested Storyline:
Set in not so obvious ancient earth. Jungle habitat. Human girl finds herself in the company of a strange lion/centuar creature. They have adventures. Eventually they fall in love, have a kid who becomes the first of a line of creatures called, oh lets say......Nephilim:)

hEY MAN ....

Sory to say this ...
But come on ...

You know the "Grissaille" technique that you aply digital ...
Comes from the earlier 13 century old masters traditional tecniques ... dont yu ...

And yu know "its importance" ... in all matters ...
So why the heck trying to do works "ala prima" man ...

When apliying the grisaile .. you can do aloooot better result work ..

but ok .. lets see this as a Rough concept sketch of something better you want to do latter only for now ..

its very good .. shows your color usage and muscle / shape modeling ... grounded skills ..
All right ....

but i'm reaaly ... thinking that the composition its .. not dinamic enouph ...

Lets say this is your first previsualization try ...
So now try to focus the camera in .. rotate it to the right ... make some streacks of light go entering the room .. make contrast in all the picture ..
Make some camera ubication ...

bha... so much to do there dude...
But lately ...
you reaaly forget to rotate your camera into the scene ..
And take several shoots ..of it into get more dinamical dramatic overal scene composition ...

I reaaly would prefer to do it my self and show what i mean .. than just talk .. ...
but i dont reaaly have the time .. but...

hope the coment could help you someway somehow ...

The lil animal ok... concept is way used too much .. and That hair make him look way too ridiculous ....
Also ...

Come on ....
This kind of compositions .. that "the characters" are posing to camera ... mostly in alot works yours ...
Reaaly spoil your talented skills works ...

Cause it should by "the character" own personality in the not strickly posing for the shoot ...
But beying caught doing something ...

Andthat become way very explicid ...
And feeled ...

And implemented with dinamic prespective also ...
That you forget alot ....

I may say that you know all this ...
You are in this as much 15y time as i ...

But are you geting lazy in "real fine art" production techniques ... or what ? ...

Sory ...

Didnt control myself here..

is just my way to wish you a best and more evoluted great and grand 2008 year Targe! <3

Have fun ...
hows yo soon and wiffe ? .. the best regards !

okay, here's what i got about the mancub: the half-naked girl banged the lion/centaur guy and out popped the mancub. Simple as that.

really good work,
just starting with oils again also, is that the way you work it always out? gouache, watercolor and then oils, what about 2 layers of thin oils and polychrymos and 2 layers of thick oils?

i just try to see the advantages...

Interesting piece! I really like the colors and use of medium.

She looks a bit bewitching, and perhaps the cub has been petrified, the father too enthralled to care? The cub definately looks surprised, or maybe like a stuffed animal.
Treyos Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2008  Hobbyist Writer
That... would be a very interesting coupling. O_o

Regardless, it looks great and it's hard to believe that's just your "rough" version. I was thinking basically the same as waterstrinity up there. Looks like some kind of royal family type portrait. Would think the "first book" would be the parents trying to protect their child during invasion/war and the second would be the child growing to manhood after losing his parents in said war and then the final book would be re-taking his homeland. Classic a-typical fantasy trilogy. ;)

My first impression is that the cub is the child of the centaur-creature and the woman, which puts some interesting pictures in my mind. It's sort of like a regal family portrait. Very beautiful
