I wrote an article on my blog about the genres of Sci-fi and fantasy and what I like about them. I wanted to create an illustration just for my own pleasure that depicted the two genres meeting one another literally. You can check out the article here [link]
and feel free to post your thoughts and ideas on the subject, which do you like the best Sci-fi or Fantasy?
Idk why Sci Fi and fantasy are different... Well. I mean I do know, but I often find them so close together sometimes that it would be hard to separate them. I will definitely pick Sci Fi over fantasy tho because, well, space! Wonderful piece tho! Really quite fantastic and shows the different pieces without having it be obvious.
Fantasy is cool but I personally prefer sci-fi since it tends to have more of a social satire aspect that I like. Also, it allows us to safely explore the possible consequences of future technologies without necessarily fucking things up in real life. I find that sci-fi is easier to relate to; a lot of the stories have some sort of direct connection to our world. It's better at making you think. And I completely agree that people should research some actual mythology and apply it to their fantasy stories to make them more interesting, instead of just ripping off Tolkien.
I like both, which is why I like Warhammer 40,000 because it has intergalactic warfare alongside warp-magic. I often times think (and i'm sure it's been confirmed) that WH40k incorporated every timeless concept from popular fiction in the 1980's to 90's. Also the entire warhammer franchise is the illegitimate father of a couple of popular games like warcraft, starcraft and halo And looking at your art gallery I can say that you have un-officially made a lot of artwork that would fit comfortably into warhammer 40k's style.
I'm of the opinion that Sci-Fi usually either focuses on the Science part or the Fiction part. I think it's at it's best when it focuses on the Fiction part but makes sure to make the Science part plausible enough that you can see how it works (if you weren't so interested in what the characters are doing). Either way, the fun part of Sci-Fi is that it doesn't usually imagine a world your brain tells you is impossible; instead, it shows a world that is plausible enough that you can't help but feel that it may be possible, while still adding in the wonder and strangeness of fantasy.
Fantasy, on the other hand, should just be where the mind runs wild. Again, you can focus on the characters or focus solely on the fantastic aspects. Oddly enough, I find that if you focus on the characters it's actually MORE important to have a stable world with hard-set rules than if you were focusing on said fantasy world. It's kinda hard to focus if everything can shift at a moment's notice, whereas if the shifting is the point you don't mind so much.
Either way, I kinda lean Sci-Fi. If I could actually write well (most attempts at writing fiction for me seem to end up either becoming essays or dialogues), I would love to create a fantasy world with slight hints that tell the reader that said fantasy world is actually sci-fi, but it wouldn't actually be a major plot point.
In any case, this piece is phenomenally beautiful.
Wonderful picture by the way.

Science Fiction is a type of Fantasy!
And Fantasy can be put into Science Fiction, all said and done.
